Vercel Acquires Better Auth, Accelerating the Development of Infrastructure for Artificial Intelligence

Vercel announced the acquisition of Better Auth, an open-source authentication library developed in TypeScript that has seen rapid adoption among the developer community since its launch in 2024. Although the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, the integration will allow Vercel to accelerate the development of identity solutions for artificial intelligence agents, an area the company considers strategic to the next generation of AI-powered applications.

Better Auth saw rapid adoption in less than a year

Launched in September 2024, Better Auth saw rapid growth in the software development ecosystem. The platform surpassed 4,7 million weekly downloads on npm and brought together more than 850 open-source contributors.

In 2025, the startup closed a seed round backed by investors including Peak XV Partners (formerly Sequoia India & Southeast Asia), Y Combinator, P1 Ventures, and Chapter One.

A solution designed to give developers greater control

Better Auth was founded by Befkadu Engida, a self-taught developer who started programming at age 18 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He developed the product’s first version there before moving to the United States to participate in Y Combinator’s Spring 2025 cohort. Y Combinator.

The platform emerged in response to the limitations that Engida saw in hosted authentication solutions such as Auth0 and Firebase. It allows developers to integrate authentication directly into their codebase, manage permissions more flexibly, and keep user data on their own infrastructure.

Agent identity becomes a priority for Vercel

Beyond adding technology widely used by developers, the acquisition reflects Vercel’s strategy to strengthen its position in the market for AI agent identity.

As AI agents begin performing tasks on users’ behalf, such as reviewing code, generating implementations, or accessing internal systems, sharing a user’s identity creates challenges around permissions, auditing, and revoking access.

Before the acquisition, Better Auth was already working on Agent Auth, an open protocol designed to give AI agents independent identities, restricted by specific permissions and revocable without affecting users’ credentials.

As part of the deal, Engida and his team will continue developing this technology at Vercel, integrating it with AI infrastructure initiatives such as Vercel Connect and eve.

Better Auth is joining Vercel.

Vercel shares our commitment to keeping auth open source, framework and platform agnostic. Joining forces gives us more resources and room to focus on building the framework that much of the community relies on.

A differentiated offering in a highly competitive market

The authentication market already has established players such as Auth0, Firebase, and Okta. However, Better Auth has differentiated itself through its open-source approach and by enabling companies to manage their own infrastructure and control their users’ data directly.

This offering has been especially well received by AI-focused startups, which need more flexible and scalable authentication solutions.

Although Better Auth will remain an open-source project under the MIT License, joining Vercel also means that part of its technological development will align with the company’s strategy for AI infrastructure and agent authentication.

The deal reflects the growth of Africa’s tech ecosystem

The acquisition also marks another success story for Africa’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

During 2024, 63 venture capital-backed startup exits were recorded in Africa, around 41% of which were strategic acquisitions.

The deal joins notable acquisitions such as Stripe’s purchase of Paystack in 2020 for more than US$200 million, and BioNTech’s acquisition of InstaDeep in 2023 for US$682 million, highlighting growing international interest in technology solutions developed on the continent.

A role model for entrepreneurs focused on technology infrastructure

The journey of Engida, from self-taught developer in Ethiopia to founder of a startup acquired by one of the leading cloud infrastructure platforms, highlights the potential of building open solutions to address emerging technological challenges.

The Better Auth story also shows how developing open-source tools, backed by an active community that includes 15.000 GitHub stars and 6.000 Discord members, can drive growth, attract investment, and create acquisition opportunities in fast-evolving sectors such as AI infrastructure.
