Solfium announced today the closing of an initial US$7 million investment in its 10 million Series A funding round. The round was led by Accion and ALIVE Ventures, with participation from Kamay Ventures. This initial investment is the first in a multi-stage funding round.
- With its integrated platform for distributed solar energy adoption, Solfium is empowering Mexican businesses and the more than 5 million micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises in their value chains to transition to cleaner, more reliable, and more affordable energy, promoting both sustainability and economic resilience.
- The fragmented Mexican market makes solar energy adoption slow and costly for most businesses, including micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), which account for nearly 99 % of all businesses and form the backbone of local and international supply chains. High energy costs and frequent power outages increase operating expenses and leave the engine of Mexico’s economy vulnerable to disruptions.
- Since 2022, Solfium has installed 36 260 solar panels, adding 25 MW of electricity generation capacity. This will reduce emissions by 281 000 tons of CO2 over 25 years, representing savings of 28 million dollars for Solfium’s customers and electricity consumers.
Solfium helps businesses decarbonize and reduce costs across their value chains through solar energy, giving millions of suppliers, customers, and employees access to cheaper, more reliable energy by simplifying adoption and providing financing, installation, and long-term support. Through partnerships with leading financial institutions, Solfium offers affordable financing options that make solar energy adoption a cost-effective solution for large businesses and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises investing in growth. Businesses using Solfium’s platform can reduce energy costs by up to 95 % over the 25-year lifespan of a solar photovoltaic system. They can also mitigate the risks of frequent power outages by integrating storage solutions. Solfium currently works with Coca-Cola, three of Mexico’s five largest banks, and other international companies to provide solar energy for their own operations and for the thousands of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises in their supply chains in Mexico.
With this new round, Solfium plans to reach millions of businesses, including small family-run enterprises, which will benefit from Solfium’s technology-driven financial inclusion initiatives and large-scale partnerships with financial partners. John Fischer, Accion’s Chief Investment Officer, said: “By connecting small business owners with the financing they need to access clean solar energy, Solfium is filling a critical gap in Mexico’s energy market.”
“With Solfium, entrepreneurs can cope with power outages, stay open longer, and continue generating revenue, all while reducing emissions and supporting Mexico’s transition to a more sustainable energy source.” We are proud to partner with Solfium, a pioneering company transforming access to clean energy for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises and households throughout Mexico. Solfium’s innovative digital platform, corporate partnership model, and strong leadership team are an excellent fit for ALIVE’s mission to support scalable businesses that drive inclusion and sustainable growth. The company is not only accelerating the energy transition, but also empowering small businesses to thrive through lower energy costs and greater resilience,” said Virgilio Barco, Managing Partner at ALIVE Ventures.
“Our mission is to make solar energy accessible to every business in Mexico, from global corporations to local entrepreneurs. Clean energy should not be a privilege. With this funding round, we are accelerating the transition to reliable, affordable solar energy that strengthens both our economy and our planet,” said Andrés Friedman, CEO and Co-Founder of Solfium.
