Medellín: The Innovation Engine of Colombia’s VC Ecosystem

Medellín: The Innovation Engine of Colombia’s VC Ecosystem is a comprehensive analysis of venture capital, high-impact startups, investors, and exits that position Medellín as one of Latin America’s most dynamic tech hubs.

Colombia on the Latin American Venture Capital Map

Colombia has established itself as one of Latin America’s most prominent entrepreneurship ecosystems. With US$224 million invested across 62 rounds in 2025, the country ranks fourth in the region by venture capital volume, behind Brazil, Mexico, and Chile. Although the figures represent a contraction from the peak recorded in 2021 and 2022, they reflect a healthy market normalization following the global valuation correction.

In less than a decade, Colombia’s ecosystem has gone through a rapid cycle: from US$49M in 2017 to more than one billion dollars a year between 2019 and 2022, before entering a consolidation phase in which investors prioritize operational efficiency, profitability, and paths to liquidity. The most active sectors include fintech, e-commerce, proptech, SaaS, and foodtech, with Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali as the country’s three main hubs.

How efficiently does Colombia channel venture capital?

The VC Efficiency Index (VEI), developed by Cuantico VP, measures the efficiency of venture capital ecosystems across three dimensions: intensity (investment as a percentage of GDP), density (per capita investment), and breadth (number of rounds per million inhabitants). Each dimension is normalized using a logarithmic transformation on a scale of 0 to 100, based on fixed benchmarks, enabling comparisons between economies of different sizes.

Colombia has a VEI of 30.5, placing it in Tier 2 of the regional ranking, alongside Mexico (30.4) and Argentina (24.7). The country’s greatest strength lies in intensity, while density—per capita investment of US$4.19—offers the greatest potential for growth.

Medellín Next: the city’s entrepreneurial future

The Medellín Next  program by Ruta N was created to identify, showcase, and strengthen the local ecosystem’s startups with the greatest traction. It is a statement of the ecosystem’s intent to help “promising” startups evolve into companies that generate revenue, grow responsibly nationally and internationally, and make an impact on the city.

In its first cohort, it selected a diverse group of companies working in fields ranging from artificial intelligence and clean energy to enterprise software, digital health, and fintech. And in 2026, it continues to support 48 high-potential startups, helping them strengthen and accelerate their businesses through a distinctive offering that combines assessments, specialized mentoring, investment readiness and connections, as well as events that provide exposure and raise their profile.

In addition, the program features a top 5 of scaleups serving as ambassadors for Medellín’s innovation, showcasing to the world the transformative power of entrepreneurs.

If you’d like to learn more about Medellín’s ecosystem, visit StartIA (startia.com.co), a free information resource on startups, investors, and the city’s offerings, which is becoming the brain connecting the district’s science, technology, and innovation (CTI) ecosystem.

“Medellín’s innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem has more than 15 years of learning and evolution behind it, and serves as a national and international benchmark. However, there is still much room to grow and learn. That’s why, since 2024, we at Ruta N have been reinventing ourselves and adapting to future challenges, such as the way artificial intelligence is impacting talent and the business environment. We are investing in an ecosystem where capital can grow and flow, and where technology-driven businesses can be founded and thrive, with a vision of generating economic and social development beyond the startup trend.” Santiago Henao, CTI Business Development Director at Ruta N.

Selection Criteria

The 5 featured companies were selected through an evaluation process that considered several key dimensions: the strength and differentiation of their value propositions; their teams’ ability to execute with precision and adapt to market conditions; demonstrated traction through concrete metrics for growth and adoption; potential to scale into other Latin American regions; and commercial validation. The selection also sought a range of industries representing Medellín and Colombia’s diverse strengths.

Below is a more detailed rationale for each company.

1. ERCO Energy

ERCO Energy is a leading renewable energy company in Colombia, specializing in solar power and electric mobility solutions for homes and businesses. Its business model combines clean technology with a digital energy management platform, allowing it to serve both residential and corporate customers using the same infrastructure. Its ability to partner with strategic players in Colombia’s energy sector validates its value proposition and charts a clear path to regional expansion in a market with growing demand for decarbonization.

2. Netux

Netux developed a platform for healthcare institutions designed to boost internal operational efficiency and improve the user experience. Its horizontal integration of various specialized solutions for clinical workflows offers a significant competitive advantage in a sector that has historically lagged in digital transformation, with strong potential to expand into other countries in the region with similar healthcare systems.

3. B2Chat

B2Chat is a multi-channel, multi-agent platform that centralizes the management of conversations across WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and other channels in one place. Its integration of AI agents, automations, and connections to CRMs such as HubSpot sets it apart, positioning it as a comprehensive conversational sales and customer service solution. As messaging-based commerce grows rapidly across Latin America, B2Chat has a replicable business model with a low barrier to entry for companies of any size, giving it strong potential for regional expansion.

4. Azimut Energía

Azimut Energía provides comprehensive energy efficiency solutions, including procurement management, usage management, technology upgrades, and distributed generation. Its approach serves companies seeking to reduce energy consumption and costs through assessment, technology, and implementation. Given the regulatory context and growing pressure on companies to reduce their carbon footprint, Azimut operates in an expanding market, and its service model can scale across multiple industries and geographies.

5. SOMOS Internet

SOMOS Internet offers fiber-optic connectivity with symmetrical speeds of up to 2 Gbps, with no minimum-term contracts, positioning itself as Colombia’s fastest internet provider. Its disruptive model, compared with traditional operators, has enabled it to expand from Medellín to Bogotá and Rionegro in a short time. The company represents an investment in technological infrastructure with a direct impact on reducing the digital divide, and its city-by-city expansion model can be replicated in other markets in Colombia and the region.

Exits by Medellín Startups: A Market in the Making

One of the most relevant indicators of any ecosystem’s maturity is its ability to generate liquidity events. Medellín has recorded at least 15 documented exits in recent years, predominantly through acquisitions by both domestic and international buyers.

Notable examples include the acquisition of ePayco by Davivienda and of Vlipco (Wompi) by Bancolombia. In software, companies such as PSL (Perficient), Ceiba (VASS), and Intergrupo (SoftwareOne) reflect Medellín’s strength as an internationally recognized technology talent hub.

Ruta N: The Catalyst for Medellín’s Ecosystem

Ruta N: The Catalyst of Medellín’s Ecosystem

No analysis of Medellín’s innovation ecosystem would be complete without addressing the role of Ruta N, the public agency of Medellín’s District of Science, Technology and Innovation, which has served as the institutional heart of the city’s technological transformation. Founded in November 2009 as a partnership between the Medellín Mayor’s Office, EPM, and UNE Telecomunicaciones, Ruta N was conceived as a regional innovation agency to lead Medellín’s transition from an industrial and informal economy to a knowledge-based economy.

In more than 15 years of operation, Ruta N’s impact is reflected in impressive figures: more than 25,000 skilled jobs created, more than US$1,000 million in foreign direct investment attracted, more than 300 companies housed in its complex, and more than 2,000 companies supported. Medellín’s investment in science, technology, and innovation rose from 0.7% of GDP in 2014 to more than 2% today, a leap that directly reflects the influence of the strategy coordinated by Ruta N.

Coordination and Access to Capital

Ruta N’s model operates according to a quintuple-helix framework: it brings together private enterprise, government, academia, international cooperation, and citizens around innovation. Its physical complex, located in the Innovation District in northern Medellín, has served as a coworking and landing space for global technology companies such as Globant, Accenture, and Hewlett-Packard, as well as a venue for strategic events. In 2025 alone, the complex hosted more than 350 events with participants from countries including Korea, Brazil, the United States, Switzerland, Turkey, and Chile.

Ruta N has played a key role in improving entrepreneurs’ access to capital by building investment capacity, fostering trust, and creating favorable conditions for connecting local and international capital. Since 2025, through the Medellín Venture Capital, the agency has trained more than 200 new investors, helped structure 5 new local investment vehicles, and made more than 15 million dollars available to the regional ecosystem. In addition, through its FutuMedstrategy, the Special Treatment Zone for Science, Technology, and Innovation that tests and experiments with technologies from companies, universities, and research and technological development centers, it has allocated more than COP 21,000 million to funding mechanisms for research and social innovation, of which COP 19,800 million was invested by Ruta N and COP 2,400 by partner universities.

In 2025, StartupBlink recognized Medellín as the fastest-growing startup ecosystem in South America over the previous two years, with growth of more than 41%. At the same time, Ruta N was named the country’s best public open-innovation ecosystem, according to the 100 Open Startups 2025 Ranking.

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead (2026–2028), Ruta N has major plans to establish Medellín as a global science, technology, and innovation hub. These include the development of FutuMed (Colombia’s first Special Treatment Zone for Science, Technology, and Innovation), strengthening the Medellín Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution —a World Economic Forum initiative focused on artificial intelligence and digital transformation—and accelerating high-impact businesses and strengthening the city’s venture capital investment ecosystem through the Medellín Next and Medellín Venture Capital strategies.

Ruta N’s case demonstrates that coordinated, sustained public intervention can be a powerful multiplier for innovation ecosystems in emerging markets. Its ability to leverage external resources—generating COP 70 for every peso invested—makes it a model not only for Colombia but for all of Latin America.

Medellín: Building on Solid Foundations

Medellín combines several factors that position it as an innovation hub with significant growth potential: a robust business community adopting the CVC model; a growing community of entrepreneurs with real traction (25 scaleups and notable startups in Medellín Next); connections to leading international investors (Y Combinator, Kaszek, Bezos Expeditions, 500 Global); and a growing track record of exits that is beginning to provide the evidence of returns needed to attract more institutional capital.

Challenges remain: per capita investment in Colombia (US$4.19) is still significantly lower than in Chile (US$12.51) or Uruguay (US$11.76), and the exit market remains narrow and dependent on M&A. However, the upward trajectory of Medellín’s ecosystem, its sectoral diversification, and the deepening of local capital suggest that the city is well positioned for the next phase of venture capital growth in Latin America.

“In Medellín, as a District of Science, Technology and Innovation, we have a unique opportunity to capitalize on our competitive advantages, our people’s talent, and the commitment of ecosystem stakeholders, in order to transform the lives of millions of people through solutions to the city’s major challenges and the creation of new opportunities.
At Ruta N, as a leader and connector of the ecosystem, we put strategic initiatives such as FutuMed, Medellín Venture Capital, StartIA, Medellín Next, and C4IR Medellín at the service of the region. These initiatives are driving the city’s economic and social development. We invite you to connect with us and be part of this bet on the future.” Carolina Londoño, executive director of Ruta N.
