What is common stock?

Common stock, or ordinary shares, are shares typically issued to shareholders in a company that do not provide any special benefits over those of other shareholders.

These shares are usually issued to a company's founders, advisors, and employees, as they typically carry voting rights (founders only) and provide no special benefits in the event of a liquidation or dividend distribution.
