A perspective on Central America’s ecosystem
- What are the main challenges facing startups in Central America, and how are they being addressed? The biggest challenge is one of vision and market. While there are many entrepreneurs with disruptive ideas, skills, and talented teams, the context often leads them to focus on a very limited vision in terms of scaling. They also face a challenge of vision, often designing solutions that are narrowly tailored to the market they’re in, where size is a limiting factor. We can’t expect startups to achieve exponential scale if they think only about serving the Central American market. It’s a good place to start, but should be seen as just one part of the journey.
- Given the region’s circumstances, in what industries or areas could Central American startups stand out and become leaders? Without a doubt, areas include technologies geared toward the B2B segment, logistics, the future of work, and financial inclusion. Central America has a large young population that can join startups serving larger, more strategic markets such as Mexico and the United States, with which we share time zones. Our region also has a strategic location as a logistics hub, which can be leveraged to provide technology solutions that integrate not only SaaS, BaaS, and similar models, but also infrastructure to serve global manufacturing supply chains with cutting-edge technology. Fintech, in the area of inclusion, is another opportunity for startups in our region to stand out. There’s an assumption that a fintech can only work in a massive market like Brazil or Mexico. However, even though Central American markets are small, fintechs are already doing some very interesting things that could scale using negative-CAC models.
- What trends have you seen in Central America’s startup ecosystem? Without a doubt, it’s a nascent ecosystem that doesn’t yet have the systematic capacity to generate startups. As a result, the trend has been to start strengthening synergies among the different countries and players through regional efforts that enable more coordinated progress. As in any early-stage sector, we’re experimenting to discover how to scale more efficiently from small markets and integrate our startups into global innovation networks, as Israel and Estonia have done. El Salvador is an interesting example, having made good progress in this regard.
- What are some examples of successful Central American startups, and what can we learn from them? We have several examples. In Guatemala, there’s Sento, a SaaS/future-of-work startup that recently got into Platanus Ventures thanks to its technology, which boosts call center efficiency with AI. In El Salvador, IntMax is building a new Ethereum protocol to offer more competitive transaction costs on the network; this year, the startup raised USD$5M in its seed round. In Honduras, there’s Doctor7, a HealthTech startup that has improved patient management efficiency by focusing on physical and mental health. In Costa Rica, there’s Avify, a startup specializing in e-commerce and inventory automation. What we can learn is that all the success stories in our region focus on solving real problems.
